SAN ANTONIO —Texas A&M University-San Antonio and Loyola University-Andalucia have signed a collaboration agreement to develop educational, professional and cultural programs that will benefit students and staff of both institutions. The agreement was signed by Dr. Maria Hernandez Ferrier, president of Texas A&M University-San Antonio, and Dr. Gabriel Pérez Alcalá, president of Loyola Andalucia, in Spain on March 11, 2014.
“We are very proud and excited to offer this incredible international connection for our students as we seek to embody our mission statement of inspiring our graduates to lifelong learning and responsible global citizenship,” said Dr. Ferrier. “This agreement will provide a wonderful opportunity to unite the cultural significance of South San Antonio with the South of Spain.”
The Memorandum of Understanding provides for the development of academic exchange programs for students and faculty, to include research projects and collaborations and seminars, along with other cultural activities.
A specially designed study abroad program is already being offered to A&M-San Antonio students this summer in Seville and the south of Spain. Lectures will be offered by University of Loyola faculty alongside professionals from Spanish multinational corporation Abengoa, a leader in sustainable, alternative energy.
The ceremonial signing of the agreement took place in Seville at the private residence of the Duke of Béjar, Pedro Roca de Togores, thus highlighting the long-standing ties between Spain and San Antonio. The seventh largest city in the United States is also one of the most important markets for Spanish companies, and is the seat of Bexar County, which was constituted as a Spanish municipality in 1731 under the name of San Fernando de Bexar.
