Points of Pride for March 30 - April 4, 2014

Student newspaper wins first - twice!

A&M-SA's online student newspaper, The Mesquite, has been recognized as one of the top student media publications across Texas and Oklahoma. The students took home two first place honors at the Region 8 Society of Professional Journalists Spring Conference in League City, Texas on March 28. The winning categories are Best Digital-Only Student Publication and Best Online Opinion and Commentary. Thanks to the hard work of The Mesquite student journalists and their advisor, Professor Jenny Moore, our newspaper is advancing to the national competition! Read more here.

Booking a historical prize

Dr. Amy Porter, assistant professor of history, has been awarded the 2014 Lou Halsell Rodenberger Book Prize in History, Culture, and Literature for her manuscript, "Women in the Central Spanish and Mexican Borderlands: Their Lives through Their Wills, 1750-1846." Investing in our best resource

Congratulations to Kristal Eaker, student chapter president of the San Antonio Human Resource Management Association, for receiving SAHRMA's Art Edgarian/Charles Umshied Scholarship! The $1,000 award was presented to Kristal at the association's March membership luncheon. The student chapter at A&M-SA has also awarded Kristal with the MATCH scholarship, which is reserved for chapter members who have received the SAHRMA scholarship. Kristal joined A&M-SA staff as a recruiter earlier this spring.

Jaguar Family joins Fiesta Especial Court

Texas A&M University-San Antonio's Council for Exceptional Children, an organization for student teachers studying special education, has successfully nominated two people with special needs to be in the entourage on the Fiesta Especial Royal Court! Both nominees are family members of current CEC members: Abrianna Gill, 16, is the daughter of Kristin Dorwald-Gill, the CEC public relations officer, and Jacob Rux, 24, is the nephew of Student Chapter President Thomas Rux. All Royal Court members get to wear sashes stating the name of the nominating organization and will participate in several Fiesta events, including the Fiesta Especial 5K & Parade on Saturday, April 5. Congratulations to these members of the Jaguar Family!
