Student newspaper earns top honors

Texas A&M-San Antonio’s student newspaper, The Mesquite, was recognized as a top student publication by the Society of Professional Journalists at the regional 2013 Mark of Excellence Awards! The Mesquite won first place in two categories, Best Online Opinion & Commentary and the overall Best Digital-Only Student Publication, which advances our newspaper onto the national competition.

SPJ’s Region 8 includes all of Texas and Oklahoma. Receiving recognition for two categories exemplifies just how strong our journalism program has become. Jenny Moore, program coordinator of the Communications-Journalism Program, attributes this success to a partnership between a small, tight-knit team of student reporters and visual journalists with the Communications-Journalism faculty.

“Since launching three years ago, student reporters have set the editorial direction, publication schedule, and coverage areas,” Moore explains. “Our student team relies on University administration to support their intellectual freedom. In turn, student journalists know they have a responsibility to report fairly and accurately.”

With this and other accolades earned by The Mesquite, it is clear that communications at A&M-SA is truly something to talk about!
