A&M-San Antonio to mark new academic year with September 15 beam-signing for $53 million College of Business and Library Building

Event also celebrates record enrollment and kicks off
Hispanic Heritage month commemorations

SAN ANTONIO — It’s been nearly 13 years since Texas A&M University-San Antonio opened its doors, and on September 15, the campus and community will once again recognize several significant milestones symbolic of the institution’s rapid growth, academic excellence, and regional leadership role. The celebration includes a 10 a.m. beam-signing ceremony (see full event schedule below), a preview tour of the new College of Business and Library Building space, followed by the kick-off of a month of Hispanic Heritage celebrations with the opening of Nuestra Gente: A Tribute to Hispanic Innovators and Dreams, a photographic exhibit curated by San Antonio artist Bernadette Peña.

Since A&M-San Antonio’s launch in 2009, more than $253 million has been invested in buildings and infrastructure that will further bolster the South Side of San Antonio and South Bexar County. The latest change to the campus footprint—the construction of a new $53 million building to house the College of Business and Library—will add 8,700 square feet of instructional space and an additional 6,310 square feet of classroom, research, and instructional lab space. Additional resources in the library will include 3,300 square feet of study rooms and 1,500 square feet of event space. More specifically, the College of Business and Library will house 15 instructional spaces, 17 Library offices, and 70 College of Business faculty and administrative offices. Funding is provided by the Permanent University Fund (PUF). The new facility is scheduled to open for classes in September 2022.

“Since 2009, A&M-San Antonio has been on a mission to become the number one choice for students to earn a university degree,” said President Cynthia Teniente-Matson. “We’re right on track, and there is no doubt that we are a university redefining higher education and creating an effective pathway that supports first-generation students.” Matson cited the caliber of A&M-San Antonio faculty (including 52 new hires this fall), record enrollment, and investment in new facilities as factors contributing to the University’s success as a Hispanic-Serving Institution.

“We are incredibly grateful to the A&M System, Board of Regents, Chancellor Sharp, and University friends who support A&M-San Antonio as we respond to the demands in San Antonio for a high-quality, affordable education,” said Matson.

Enrollment growth. This fall, the University once again began the new academic year with record enrollment, welcoming more than 1,050 new first-year students. This past spring, nearly 900 students graduated from A&M-San Antonio—the largest graduating class to date—and joined the ranks of nearly 14,000 alumni. Among current students, about 70 percent are the first in their family to earn a university degree, and 73 percent identify as Hispanic. Approximately 98 percent of A&M-San Antonio students receive financial support, and many pay no tuition. Since its inception, the University has awarded approximately $125 million in scholarship funding.

College of Business Overview. A&M-San Antonio’s College of Business includes a Department of Computing and Cyber Security, which houses the Cyber Engineering Technology/Cyber Security Research Center funded by a $1 million grant from the Texas A&M University System Chancellor’s Research Initiative (CRI). The center focuses on research in the areas of security and privacy in the internet of things and cloud computing, secure vehicle-to-vehicle communications, and cyber physical systems. The Fire and Emergency Services Administration department is also housed under the College of Business, providing firefighters with the theoretical and practical knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to manage and lead today’s modern fire service. The College offers bachelor’s degrees in accounting, computer science, computer information systems, finance, management, and marketing, and Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Professional Accounting (MPA) degrees.
