San Antonio — Dr. Salvador Hector Ochoa officially starts today as the third president of Texas A&M University-San Antonio, succeeding Dr. Linda Schott, who began as interim president Jan. 17, 2023.
A nationally regarded scholar and researcher, Ochoa previously served as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at San Diego State University. He has also served as Dean of the College of Education at the University of New Mexico and The University of Texas-Pan American.
Ochoa, who grew up in McAllen, earned his Ph.D. in school psychology from Texas A&M University in 1989, later receiving the 2013 Texas A&M University College of Education and Human Development Outstanding Alumni Award. He will be responsible for implementing system policies and effectively leading the institution; sustaining and enhancing the institution’s mission and overall operations; and fostering and building upon the existing traditions, distinctiveness, and strengths of the university.
Ochoa begins his tenure as president during an exciting time at A&M-San Antonio, the fastest-growing university in the A&M System. With more than 7,300 students, the University’s enrollment and academic programs continue to grow, and the campus is expanding with several new projects, including new student housing and a recreation center.
