Jerry Quijano (Student)

Banner Meet communication senior Jerry Quijano! Jerry was selected for a competitive audio storytelling program hosted by NPR's Next Generation Radio and the Belo Center for New Media at the The University of Texas at Austin held August 13-19. Next Generation Radio Project is a week-long digital journalism training project designed to give competitively selected participants the skills and opportunity to report and produce multimedia stories. Those chosen for the project are paired with a professional journalist who serves as their mentor.

Jerry also serves as managing editor of The Mesquite and is a producer for “Magnified,” a storytelling production. Jerry’s enthusiasm for storytelling earned him a spot to attend the 2016 Podcast Movement in Chicago, where he received instruction on crafting audio stories. Jerry envisions working in public radio in a large market and would like to become a producer for WBEZ’s This American Life. When he isn’t writing or editing, Jerry can be found reading a book, reading a newspaper or meditating.

Excerpt from Quijano's personal reflection, "Take a chance on yourself": "What I hope to keep practicing in my life, and what I encourage you to try with me, is to be as present as possible in each moment you can. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, count to 10, and do it again. When you open your eyes, do it with purpose and recognize the potential you have within you. All it requires is that we say "yes," and do our part."
