Meet Brandon Oliver. Texas A&M University-San Antonio’s (A&M-SA) very own creative design manager for marketing and communications. And a staff member whose been working for A&M-SA for 10 years.
Born in San Antonio, Oliver grew up in California and during a brief time, moved to Florida. When he heard about a wrestling school founded by Shawn Michaels opening up in San Antonio, Texas, Oliver played with the thought of attending college and attending the wrestling school at the same time. He decided to take the shot and moved back to his roots.
While enrolled at Southwest Texas State (now Texas State University) in San Marcos, Oliver attended wrestling school in San Antonio, juggling both ambitions simultaneously. His intended major was political science, but as fate would have it, Oliver found himself discussing communications with the departmental staff about the opportunities afforded undergraduate students within their program. It was a done deal, he changed his major to communications.
After dabbling his foot in writing, TV and radio, Oliver graduated from college and decided it was time to receive his teaching certificate. He taught at Natalia high school for a time until he read an article about the new and upcoming university on the South Side -- Texas A&M University-Kingsville system center San Antonio (now Texas A&M University-San Antonio).
Oliver saw the opportunity as a way to facilitate the growth of what could be the start of revitalization for the city’s South Side community. So, he applied for a position and landed a job at what has become A&M-SA. Oliver assisted in designing the first image of the mascot Jaguar – an important accomplishment for the budding institution. Oliver’s hand in the University goes even further than the Jaguar, he also created the President’s Seal, which is seen on the Esperanza tower as you drive into A&M-SA’s front entrance.
A&M-SA has allowed Oliver the freedom to be involved with the University in other ways. He served as president of Staff Council and has been a co-chair for the Festival de Cascarones. A primary goal for Oliver is to continue to strengthen the University’s brand and for everyone to know that A&M-SA resides and thrives in the South Side. Another goal of his is to improve diversity and equity and further develop the Jaguar family.
When Oliver is not working on A&M-SA’s branding, he is known as Boom Boom Brandon Oliver – a character in his independent wrestling promotion company, River City Wrestling (RCW). He started the company after being surrounded by a robust wrestling community in Florida. His passion for wrestling continues to grow, and through RCW, hosts wrestling events at different venues around San Antonio.
Oliver is just one of many staff working at A&M-SA who contribute to the prosperous growth of the University.
