Jaguar Writing Spaces
Each week the Center for Academic Innovation holds Jaguar Writing Spaces for the faculty. Depending on the semester, the time and room may change, but generally, Jaguar Writing Spaces meets on Friday mornings throughout the academic year. The sessions are 90 minutes long and follow the Pomodoro technique for conducting sustained yet well-paced activities. Having dedicated faculty writing spaces is important for several reasons:
First, dedicated spaces minimize distractions and interruptions. Academic writing requires deep concentration and extended periods of focused thought. A designated writing space creates a physical and mental boundary between writing time and other responsibilities like teaching, advising, paperwork, or committee work.
Second, these spaces help establish consistent writing routines. The reality of publishing in academia means that regular writing is essential for faculty career advancement and post-tenure review. Having a reliable space signals to the brain that "this is where writing happens," helping overcome procrastination and writer's block.
Third, dedicated writing spaces and meetings can foster community and accountability. Faculty writing groups or retreats create opportunities for peer feedback, collaboration, and moral support. This community aspect found in faculty writing spaces helps counter the isolation that often accompanies academic writing.
Fourth, dedicated spaces acknowledge that writing is core professional work, not an add-on activity. When institutions provide and protect faculty writing spaces, they signal that scholarship production is valued and essential.
