FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, November 13, 2014

SAN ANTONIO—Today, Texas A&M University-San Antonio is now one of only four Texas universities—the first in San Antonio—to be designated a Purple Heart University. The Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH), which approves this designation to qualified universities, seeks to foster an environment of goodwill and camaraderie among combat wounded veterans, promote patriotism, support necessary legislative initiatives, and provide service to all veterans and their families.

The Purple Heart is the oldest award given by the United States military services, created by General George Washington in 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit, and is only awarded to members of the armed forces who are wounded or killed during service to the country.

By being designated a Purple Heart University, Texas A&M-San Antonio joins other universities, cities and states across the country in honoring the sacrifices made by Purple Heart Medal recipients and showing gratitude to all veterans for their contributions to defending the freedom of the United States.

Today at 10:30 a.m., Dr. Maria Hernandez Ferrier signed a proclamation to confirm the designation of Texas A&M-San Antonio as a Purple Heart Universityin the Ceremony Room at Patriots’ Casa. Bill Crumlett, Department Adjutant for the Department of Texas Military Order of the Purple Heart of the U.S.A., attended along with members of the Alamo Chapter 1836.
