FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, December 9, 2014

SAN ANTONIO—Texas A&M University-San Antonio has met yet another important milestone today with the announcement by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) accrediting the University separately from Texas A&M University-Kingsville.  Accreditation is retroactive to January 1, 2014.

“This accreditation comes at an auspicious time, on the heels of naming an interim president to start in January, who will continue the trajectory of success that was started by founding president Dr. Maria Hernandez Ferrier,” said John Sharp, Chancellor of The Texas A&M University System. “Dr. Ferrier’s hard work is largely responsible for achieving this milestone, and she is leaving a strong foundation on which a very bright future will be built for Texas A&M University-San Antonio.”

A&M-San Antonio became a stand-alone university on May 27, 2009 when Governor Rick Perry signed Senate Bill 629, establishing the University as a member of The Texas A&M University System. Since that time, SASCOC has recognized A&M-San Antonio as an entity of its parent university, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, and all degrees awarded have been awarded by an accredited institution.

Now that A&M-San Antonio is separately accredited, the University will seek SACSCOC approval, as needed, to add to and diversify its degree programs and course offerings, including “downward expansion”, which will develop A&M-SA to a full four-year university, and the addition of doctoral degrees.

Texas A&M University-San Antonio is one of the fastest growing universities in the state and offers baccalaureate and master’s degrees in a variety of in-demand fields. A military-embracing university, the dedicated faculty and staff prepare and empower students to be innovative and contributing members of a global society.

“This is a momentous occasion and major milestone for A&M-San Antonio and I am thankful for the team, led by Dr. Holly Verhasselt, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs that worked tirelessly on this imperative for the past several years and I am honored to have served as President during this amazing period of growth and development,” stated Dr. Maria Hernandez Ferrier, President of Texas A&M-San Antonio.

Texas A&M University-San Antonio is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate and master’s degrees.
