A Festive Time at A&M-SA
Dear Members of the A&M University-San Antonio Community:
Provost Mike O'Brien, VP of Business Affairs Bill Spindle and I represented the University at the Texas A&M University System's Board of Regents meeting in College Station last week. I am pleased to report that at the meeting, six of our faculty were granted tenure. I am extremely proud of all our faculty members for their commitment to education and leadership at A&M-San Antonio.
After an extensive collaborative effort, the 2017 Master Plan is complete. A few weeks ago, VP Spindle and I presented the plan to Chancellor John Sharp, and it was well-received. Thank you for your input in the planning of our growing University. For an overview of the 2017 Master Plan, please visit the Master Plan website.
In other news, we are in the midst of designing a new campus parking lot, scheduled to be completed for the fall 2017 semester. The lot will be on the west side of campus, along Verano Way, and it will add 600+ spaces for students.
The construction of the Science and Technology Building is well underway. We are on schedule and are hitting our targeted milestones. Last week, work began on the concrete foundation and utility installation. In the upcoming weeks, plumbing and underground electrical work will commence.
On Sunday, we held the seventh annual Festival de Cascarones. More than 7,000 attendees filled the campus for the official finale of Fiesta. During the event, we took a crack at a world record by attempting to break the most cascarones at one event. An estimated 2,000 people participated in smashing the confetti-filled eggs on the West Lawn. Festival de Cascarones was a hit!
With the conclusion of the Fiesta season, we are now in the home stretch of the spring semester. I am excited to announce that in 15 days, we are on target to confer our 10,000th degree! What an amazing testament to the commitment and grit of the A&M-San Antonio community.
I invite you to help us celebrate the momentous occasion at the Spring 2017 Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 19 at 4 p.m. at the Freeman Coliseum. A faculty and staff reception will immediately follow the ceremony.
With the exciting activities and development occurring at A&M-San Antonio, it is imperative to maintain consistent and transparent communication. I encourage you to contact me should you have any comments, questions or concerns. I have an open-door policy and can also be reached via email or through the Share. Help. Acknowledge. Request. Exchange. (S.H.A.R.E.) webpage.
The vibrancy on campus is infectious! Thank you for your enthusiasm and commitment to our students during this exciting time of year.
Warm Regards,
Cynthia Teniente-Matson
President
