University’s first class of incoming freshmen to be recognized
in unique drive-thru celebration
SAN ANTONIO – Just four years ago, Texas A&M University-San Antonio welcomed its first freshman class, establishing it as a comprehensive, four-year institution. The historic class of 2020 was also the first to participate in the Jaguar March, a now traditional part of Freshman Convocation where the incoming students walk from the iconic Torre de Esperanza to the front of the A&M-San Antonio main campus, welcomed by an enthusiastic crowd of faculty, staff and fellow Jaguar students. And, now that graduation is coming up, the class of 2020 – along with the transfers who make up the majority of the graduating class – is making history again.
Although the traditional commencement ceremony has been rescheduled to September, A&M-San Antonio is honoring the class of 2020, and all graduating students, this month in a special, first-of-its-kind celebration called “Operation Graduation – Curbside Edition.” On the original commencement date of May 15, all graduating students are invited to the A&M-San Antonio campus to participate in a unique “drive-thru” celebration of their accomplishments.
Participants will park their cars, walk to a designated spot at the edge of the courtyard near the University fountain and have their picture taken with A&M-San Antonio President Cynthia Teniente-Matson and University mascot General the Jaguar in front of an iconic campus backdrop. All of this will be accomplished while adhering to social distancing guidelines, ensuring a safe and healthy celebration for all.
Operation Graduation – Curbside Edition will take place May 15 during two sessions: 9-11 a.m. and 5-7 p.m. An alternative plan that also maintains social distancing in the event of inclement weather has been created. The traditional commencement ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 25 at Freeman Coliseum. Visit tamusa.edu/commencement for updates.
