Texas A&M University-San Antonio brings on South Texas Allergy & Asthma Medical Professionals to manage COVID-19 testing

SAN ANTONIO – Local medical firm, South Texas Allergy and Asthma Medical Professionals (STAAMP), will manage on-campus COVID-19 testing for Texas A&M University-San Antonio as part of the Institution’s plans to maintain health and safety on campus as the institution readies for the Fall semester.

The firm will manage the University’s on-campus testing operations to ensure safety, efficacy, and efficiency in administering and responding to test results. The on-campus testing is provided as part of a program launched by the A&M System to provide testing support for its campuses across the state through a contract with Curative, Inc., a leading national testing provider. STAAMP will administer the testing, work with Curative to get results, and coordinate with the university appropriate notification, tracing, and public health and safety steps.

STAAMP is a San Antonio-based firm with expertise in respiratory testing and care as well as COVID-19 testing. The firm specializes in a wide variety of allergic conditions including asthma, seasonal allergies (hay fever) and food allergies. STAAMP also offers for at-home, in-clinic and corporate patients, as well as COVID-19 resources on their website.

“The testing is part of our comprehensive plan to ensure the health and safety of the campus community as we return for the Fall 2020 semester,” said Kathryn Funk-Baxter, A&M-San Antonio vice president for business affairs and chief financial officer. “We look forward to partnering with STAAMP and appreciate the expertise they will bring in providing on-campus COVID-19 testing for our faculty, staff, and students.”

“South Texas Allergy & Asthma Medical Professionals is committed to the health of our community,” said Dr. Erika Gonzalez, CEO/president and medical director of STAAMP Allergy. “Our team is ready to support this comprehensive plan. The students are relying on equitable health care solutions like access to testing and back to school plans. We are here to help with that.”

For the Fall semester, A&M-San Antonio is planning primarily remote courses – less than 13 percent of courses will be delivered via face-to-face instruction. The University has created a thorough cleaning, social distancing, and screening process for these courses, and is limiting these course offerings to those classes that require in-person instruction, and freshman-level courses that will help new students better acclimate to higher education and to set a solid foundation for success.
