Apply College of Education brings together students, faculty, staff and community to recognize the significant role of teachers
SAN ANTONIO – In honor of the more than 350,000 dedicated educators across the state, Texas A&M University-San Antonio is celebrating 2020 World Teachers’ Day on Monday, Oct. 5, 2020, with activities throughout the week to recognize the selflessness and commitment of teachers. This year’s theme, “Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future,” recognizes the importance of attaining the global education target of leaving no one behind.
Instrumental in leading efforts for the community to develop creative and relevant ways to celebrate and rally teachers on World Teachers’ Day are the Raise Your Hand Texas Foundation and the Charles Butt Foundation, both of which are steadfast in their advocacy and support for teachers.
“Most of us can remember a teacher who challenged, molded, motivated or inspired us to be our best self, and though it is deserving of more than a day, we dedicate Oct. 5 to honoring those who are committed to our education,” said Dr. Carl Sheperis, dean of the College of Education and Human Development at A&M-San Antonio.
A&M-San Antonio will illuminate the Torre de Esperanza (the tower at the entrance of University Way that is visible from Loop-410), the fountain and the dome of Central Academic Building in blue, recognizing the University’s graduates and Teachers of the Year as well as celebrating the lasting impact educators have had on our lives. Blue represents disciplines and degrees in the field of education in academic regalia as well as the statewide #TeachersCan initiative.
World Teachers’ Day, celebrated each October, is an opportunity to recognize the teaching profession worldwide, take stock of achievements and draw attention to the voices of teachers. The day also commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 International Labor Organization (ILO)/United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recommendation concerning the status of teachers. This recommendation set benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.
All 11 universities in the Texas A&M System will, via social media and other online efforts, be encouraging their communities to consider the contributions teachers have made to provide remote learning, support vulnerable populations, reopen schools and ensure learning gaps are mitigated. “We want to celebrate World Teachers’ Day in a big way all across Texas this year,” said Elaine Mendoza, chairman of the Texas A&M System Board of Regents. “2020 has taught us all to better appreciate the importance of those who choose to spend their lives teaching others.”
