Apply SAN ANTONIO – Texas A&M University-San Antonio Texas A&M University–San Antonio has been approved for full membership in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) following a vote by the organization’s Council of Presidents on May 26 during the 80th Annual NAIA Convention.
As full members, A&M–San Antonio’s four varsity sports teams (softball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer) will be eligible to compete for postseason championships in the NAIA and the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) effective July 1, 2021. The Jaguars athletics program became members of the RRAC shortly after their provisional NAIA membership was approved in 2020.
“Achieving active membership status is a significant milestone for A&M-San Antonio and the intercollegiate athletics program,” university president Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson said. “I look forward to the continued successes of the athletics department and watching the student-athletes excel in the classroom and compete for national and conference championships.”
The University launched its varsity intercollegiate athletics program in January 2021 with the debut of the softball and men’s golf teams. “We are very excited to be active members of the NAIA,” A&M–San Antonio director of athletics Darnell Smith said. “Active membership, and the privileges it entails, allows us to provide an exceptional experience for the student-athletes in our growing program; it also offers eligibility to compete in postseason competition, serve on national committees and vote on national issues.”
“On behalf of the entire athletics program, I wish to thank the Council of Presidents for voting to extend active NAIA membership to A&M-San Antonio and for recognizing the merits and potential of our institution,” Smith added.

Association of Intercollegiate Athletics

Red River Athletic Conference
Founded in 1998, the RRAC will expand to 14 member institutions in Texas, Louisiana and New Mexico for the 2021-22 academic year. The RRAC is a member of the NAIA and places an emphasis on the values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership as a full participant in the NAIA Champions of Character program. Based in Waco, Texas, the RRAC holds championships in 11 men's and women's sports annually and recognizes student-athletes for academic performance and athletic achievement.
