Associate Vice Provost Announced

Dr. WilliamsTexas A&M University-San Antonio welcomes Dr. Duane Williams as the new associateviceprovost. 

SAN ANTONIO —Texas A&M University-San Antonio officially welcomes Dr. Duane Williams as the associate vice provost of student success and retention. Dr. Williams will develop and execute strategies for targeted intervention initiatives to support the University's enrollment, retention, persistence and student success. The associate vice provost will oversee Academic Advisement, the Student Academic Success Center, First-Year Experience and other student success-related initiatives within the division of Academic Affairs. Dr. Williams will closely collaborate with other University divisions, academic leadership and various campus units to develop, implement and evaluate student success initiatives.

 Dr. Williams recently earned his Doctorate of Philosophy in Family Science and Human Development at Montclair State University, were he did his dissertation on Black First-Generation Professionals: Leaders That You Never Heard of Before — An Exploratory Study of Lived Experiences. Before that, he earned his master's in public administration from Kean University and his bachelor's in management science.  

 Dr. Williams holds 16 years of experience serving institutions of higher education at Montclair State University and Kean University in New Jersey. Dr. Williams has served as the director for the Center of Leadership and Engagement at Montclair University since 2018 where he oversaw programs and initiatives to foster engagement, growth and success for adult learners, veterans, military students and knowledge is power programs (KIPP) students while provided leadership and oversight which served the freshmen and transfer students. In addition to this role, Dr. Williams previously served as the University's director for the Office of Academic Success and Retention Program.

He brings broad knowledge and experience that will be crucial in coordinating student success and retention efforts across the entire campus. His leadership will strengthen the collaborations and synergy among the divisions of academic affairs, student success and engagement, and enrollment management. I look forward to working closely with Dr. Williams," said Dr. Abdelrahman Mohamed, Texas A&M-San Antonio provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs. 

 The Office of the Provost's mission is to support academic excellence throughout the University by coordinating with the academic colleges to maintain the quality of the academic programs offered at A&M- San Antonio and develop new academic programs to serve the needs of the students. Dr. Williams' role will ensure support and intervention for special student populations, including historically underrepresented, first-generation, military-connected and transfer students.  

 "My observation is that Texas A&M-San Antonio has a rich and vibrant culture, reflected and espoused through its students and community members; I am eager to immerse myself in this community in an effort to support our students in their respective goals and aspirations," said Dr. Williams. 

 Dr. Williams will lead a student success and retention committee, develop programs and services to counsel and provide guidance to students, and collaborate with academic deans, department chairs and faculty to implement targeted interventions to increase student retention, success and graduation. He will also work closely with Academic Affairs, Student Affairs and Enrollment Management to work independently while developing solid collaborative relationships throughout the University.
