Bio:

Dr. Chris A. Mares earned a B.S. in biology from the University of the Incarnate Word in 2001 and a Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology in 2010 from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.  Dr. Mares is also a Texas Education Agency certified teacher in 7-12 science and spent three years teaching in the Northside Independent School District.  He currently teaches general biology, cell biology, cell physiology, and immunology at Texas A&M University-San Antonio.  Dr. Mares has performed research on host-pathogen interactions using both in vivo and in vitro models.  His research has focused on cell death pathways exploited by pathogenic microbes to kill host innate immune cells and the inflammatory consequences of pathogen-induced cell death.  Other research interests include in vivo models of bacterial pneumonia and the contribution of endogenous danger-associated molecular patterns to sepsis and/or sterile inflammation.
