Educator CAFE Applications for Teacher Candidates

The Educator CAFE oversees applications to the educator preparation program for students seeking teacher certification. Applications for teacher candidates are also required for Field Residency 1 and 2, as well as Clinical Teaching and Teacher Residency.

Listed below are the admissions requirements for students seeking teacher certification for initial admission to the Educator CAFE and for each subsequent semester of field experience.

Application Dates:

Fall - Last two weeks of February.
Spring - Last two weeks of September.

Admission Requirements for Students Seeking Teacher Certification

Core Subjects EC-6, Core Subjects 4-8, and Core Subjects EC-6 or 4-8 with Special Education EC-12 Applicants

  1. Overall or last 60-hour GPA of 2.75 or higher at the time the application is submitted.
  2. All core coursework is complete with a "C" or higher in all core courses before admittance into the Educator CAFE.
  3. Have completed the following courses with a C or better: HIST 2301, MATH 1350, MATH 1351, EDCI 1301
  4. All education courses must be a "C" or better.

Core Subjects EC-6 and 4-8 Bilingual Applicants

  1. Above list for EC-6 and 4-8 Core Content Applicants; and
  2. Approval from the Bilingual Faculty

History 7-12, Social Studies 7-12, ELAR 7-12 and Kinesiology EC-12 Applicants

  1. Overall or last 60-hour GPA of 2.75 or better (at the time the application is submitted)
  2. Be Core Complete - checked at the top of Degree Works (before the next semester begins)
  3. Have completed at least 12 hours in your major area with a C or better

Math 7-12 and Life Science 7-12 Applicants

  1. Overall or last 60-hour GPA of 2.75 or better (at the time the application is submitted)
  2. Be Core Complete - checked at the top of Degree Works (before the next semester begins)
  3. Have completed at least 15 hours in your major area with a C or better

Any Content in 7-12 with Special Education EC-12

  1. Above list for 7-12 subject areas; and
  2. EDCI 1301

Educator CAFE Exit Policy for Teacher Candidates

Failure to comply with the stipulations listed below may result in being exited from the Educator CAFÉ. 

Candidates shall: 

1. Maintain a GPA of 2.75 (overall or last 60 hours).
2. Pass a Background Check (students are given 2 district chances).
3. Make adequate progress in coursework. 
4. Follow the Educator Code of Conduct and Ethics. (If assigned a Fitness to Teach or Growth Plan, adequate progress and resolution must be reached.) 
5. Maintain an active status in ASEP (the state of Texas system for teacher candidates). (Students are removed from ASAP if they are inactive at the university for one calendar year.) 
6. Be recommended by both Cooperating Teacher and Field Supervisor through the End of Year Disposition. 
7. Maintain a professional relationship with district partners and the Educator CAFÉ faculty and staff. 
 

Please note that the Educator CAFÉ faculty may determine that a candidate should be removed from the Educator CAFÉ for a reason not listed.
