Graduate English Program Admission Requirements
1. Applicants must complete the “Apply Texas” general graduate application and submit the $35 application fee:
2. Applicants must submit the following supporting materials:
- Two letters of recommendation from individuals well acquainted with your academic/professional ability who can attest to your potential for success in an English MA program.
- A sample of academic writing 7-15 pages long.
3. All undergraduate and graduate transcripts from accredited and unaccredited institutions must be submitted to the Admissions Office. Students must have 18 semester hours of undergraduate courses in English, including a minimum of 12 advanced (junior-senior level) semester hours. The Department has the right to examine students’ prerequisites and to accept equivalent hours or to require additional work if necessary.
4. Official General GRE scores must be submitted to the Admissions Office.
4.1 Students with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher must have a combined GRE General Test score of 285 or higher. Students are encouraged to submit their GRE scores with their transcripts. The Admissions Office will accept the scores no later than the end of the first semester of classes. If students do not submit GRE scores with their transcripts, they will be admitted conditionally. Once the required scores are received, students must request admission to graduate status via the Graduate Coordinator.
4.2 Students with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.6 to 2.99 must have a combined GRE General Test score (V+Q) of 298 or higher. They can be admitted on a probationary status only if they have a combined GRE score that is over 285 and under 298.
4.3 Students with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.0 to 2.59 must submit a combined GRE General Test score (V+Q) of 298 or higher with their application and transcripts.
