Spanish in the US at Texas A&M University, San Antonio
Our language studies program focuses on Spanish in the US. This approach validates the languages spoken in our community, while allowing students to learn about the history on Spanish in the United States and the diverse cultural and linguistic practices of Spanish speakers in the US. Our curriculum acknowledges the bilingual, bicultural, and biliteracy practices that our students bring with them to our classes. We believe that whether students grew up with Spanish in their homes or not, living in South Texas exposes us all to the language in one way or another. As a Hispanic Serving Institution, with over 70% of students who identify as Hispanic/Latino, Spanish is an essential language for our students and their families.
We believe that supporting our students’ literacy practices is also part of our HSI identity. Our curricular and pedagogical approach validates our students’ local knowledges and honors their linguistic abilities. For example, we use and encourage translanguaging, which promotes the use of students’ full language repertoire. To meet these pedagogical goals, we offer courses at the elementary and intermediate level that build on students’ diverse abilities and increase their confidence using written and spoken Spanish, while also attending to their listening and reading abilities. Through our approach and program, we hope to build competent and effective bilingual professionals.
