Testing Center - College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

The College-Level Examination Program, or CLEP, provides students the opportunity to demonstrate college-level achievement through a program of exams in college courses. CLEP examinations measure knowledge of the material usually covered in various classes during college. With CLEP a student can earn college credit for what he or she already knows, regardless of where or how that knowledge was acquired.  Students can earn 3 to 9 hours of college credit, depending on exam and score.  This helps students save time and money, and earn credit for what they already know!

CLEP Eligibility for A&M-SA Students

CLEP cannot duplicate or repeat credit already earned through college or university classes.  Students can receive credit for a passed CLEP exam for courses in which they have received grades of "F," "NC" or "W" since these grades do not represent hours earned.  Students may not receive any CLEP credit for courses which credit has already been awarded, including courses taken and awarded a grade of "A," "B," "C," or "D" grade.  In order for A&M-SA to award credit, the individual must be a current A&M-SA student and have CLEP send their official score report directly to A&M-SA.

CLEP Frequently Asked Questions

How long is each CLEP exam?

All online tests are 90 minutes, with the exception of College Composition, which is 120 minutes, and Spanish with Writing, which is 110 minutes.

Can I re-take a CLEP exam?

Yes, but you must wait 90 days between test dates.

Do I have to be an A&M-SA student to take a CLEP exam at A&M-SA?

No. A&M-SA offers CLEP testing to anyone.  Examinees have the opportunity when they order their CLEP Voucher to select the institution to which the scores should be sent.

Where can I find study materials?

CLEP offers study guides that students can purchase for a nominal fee, as well as some free study information.  Free online CLEP courses are also available through Modern States' Freshman Year for Free program.  Modern States is a nonprofit education alliance dedicated to college access for all, and its Freshman Year for Free program helps students earn up to one year of college credit without tuition or textbook expenses.

How much does it cost?

Each computer-based test costs $113 ($93 to CLEP and $20 to A&M-SA).  The CLEP registration is good for 6 months from date of purchase.  The first attempt for eligible military personnel, civilian employee, and spouse of participating Reserve Component and Coast Guard personnel is no cost.  To verify eligibility, please refer to the DANTES Eligibility Chartfor additional information.

How will I know if A&M-SA will accept my CLEP credit?
