Cost

The total contribution depends on the specific coverage you choose, but it's often several hundred dollars. Check the System’s premiums charts for more detailed cost information.
Delayed Employer Contributions
Employer contributions do not begin until the first of the month after your 60th day of employment (unless you are transferring with no break in service from another Texas state agency or institute of higher education). For new employees, paying the full premium for three months can be a considerable expense. Some employees elect to delay coverage or continue their existing coverage until they qualify for employer contributions.
Pretax Premiums
Many premiums are deducted from your paycheck before you pay federal income and Social Security taxes, unless you request otherwise. This means that you pay less tax and your take-home pay is higher.
