Student Counseling Center
Mental Health Services

The Student Counseling Center (SCC) is a welcoming, supportive, and confidential space. Our licensed and professionally trained staff offers free and confidential mental health services to currently enrolled Texas A&M University-San Antonio students in various formats: one-on-one sessions, group therapy, and walk-in services for urgent situations. Because student fees cover these services, visits do not require out-of-pocket expenses.

Individual Therapy

The Student Counseling Center (SCC) utilizes a brief therapy model for individual therapy. Brief therapy is typically solution-oriented, and sessions are geared towards direct and active interventions to help clients achieve specific goals. Brief therapy can range in frequency and duration.  Mental health clinicians typically meet with clients bi-weekly (approximately every two weeks) over 1-2 semesters.

Some of the concerns commonly addressed in brief therapy include:

  • Personal Concerns: Stress, anxiety, depression, anger, loneliness, low self-esteem, grief, and loss
  • Relationship Concerns: Romantic relationships, roommate conflicts, family distress, social life
  • Developmental Concerns: Identity (e.g., personal, cultural, spiritual, sexual orientation, gender identity), adjustment to college, healthy lifestyle choices, decisions, life transitions
  • Academic Concerns: Motivation, test and performance anxiety, perfectionism
  • Other Concerns: Effects of trauma, assault, abuse, body image, unhealthy eating patterns
Sometimes, a client’s needs fall outside the expertise or resources available at the Student Counseling Center. In keeping with the brief therapy model, clients requiring long-term, intensive support and specialized care will be referred to community resources for ongoing treatment. The SCC Clinical Case Manager assists with this bridge to ensure that students are connected with the support that they need.

Group Therapy

The Student Counseling Center offers group therapy services to address student concerns in various areas. An initial appointment is required to join group therapy. All groups are free and confidential for SCC clients.

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy that usually involves anywhere from 5 to 10 individuals and 1 to 2 experienced group therapists. Most therapy groups meet every week at the same time for approximately 90 minutes. During this time, group members discuss their concerns and offer each other support and feedback. Interpersonal interaction is highly valued and encouraged. Group therapy may benefit students who have relationship difficulties or want to learn about themselves and their connections to others.

The content of group therapy sessions is confidential; what group members talk about and share is not discussed outside of the group. Given the significance of this topic, confidentiality is frequently discussed among group members throughout the group.

In the fall and spring semesters, the Student Counseling Center offers groups on varying topics including healthy relationships, self-care, coping skills, grief, and more.  To learn more about groups in the upcoming semester, visit the SCC Instagram at @tamusastudentcounseling or on Jagsync

Case Management

Case Management services are designed to help students get connected to community referrals. Clients whose needs fall outside the scope of services or scheduling availability of the Student Counseling Center (SCC) are referred to community resources. Such referrals might occur immediately following the initial appointment or after some treatment and a further needs assessment. The Student Counseling Center Case Manager provides community referral options to meet a client’s needs best and follows up to offer additional assistance finding resources.

When a community referral is the most appropriate treatment option for clients, they will be provided several community referral options. The Case Manager will work closely with them to ensure they are connected to a community provider. To the best of the Case Manager’s ability, these options will address client circumstances regarding health insurance, finances, and transportation.

Examples of community referrals the Case Manager can assist with:

  • Community referrals for long-term, intensive support and specialized care,
  • Medication management,
  • Basic needs include food insecurities, housing, transportation, clothing/hygiene, and financial assistance,
  • Other community resources include but are not limited to support groups, violence prevention resources, psychological testing referrals, outpatient treatment services, and court-ordered/mandated assessments and treatment.
