After only one year of teaching special education at MacArthur High School, A&M-SA alumnus Blake Sammons has been named Outstanding Teach of the Year by the Council for Learning Disabilities (CLD), a national organization dedicated to improving the education and life of students with learning disabilities. Blake earned his teaching certification from A&M-SA's Graduate Teacher Certification program and went on to graduate in May 2014 with a Master of Education in Special Education. He will accept his award at the CLD International Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, held October 2-3, 2014. Read more about Blake's inspirational story here and on the Express-News.

Record-breaking number of communications students selected for scholarship

Four A&M-SA Communications students have been awarded scholarships from the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists (SAAHJ). This marks the largest number of A&M-SA students from the University to receive this scholarship since the University's Communications program began in 2009. The scholarships will be awarded at the annual SAAHJ Scholarship & Awards Gala on Friday, August 8 at the Marriott Rivercenter. Congratulations to Alma Linda Manzanares, Lorie A. Hidalgo, La Quinta Dixon, and Christopher Vasquez!

Jaguar students break new ground with special education student organization

A&M-San Antonio has forged the path to bring awareness and increased opportunities for students about special education by becoming the first university in the country to found a student Council of Learning Disabilities (CLD). The new "SCLD at Texas A&M University-San Antonio" Chapter has been awarded a competitive chapter grant from the CLD national headquarters and will be officially recognized as a student organization by the University beginning fall 2014. The four founding officers of the SCLD chapter are: President Kristen Dorwald-Gill, Vice President Patricia Hernandez, Secretary Sarah Sanchez, and Treasurer Erica Reyna. Dr. Theresa Dorel, assistant professor of special education, and Dr. Adrian Sorrell, associate professor of special education, are co-advisors for the new student chapter.

A&M-SA professor tunes into early women broadcasters

Dr. Ann Bliss, assistant professor of English, has been awarded the American Fellowship from the American Association of University Women to research "radio homemakers," early women radio broadcasters located in the Midwest. Dr. Bliss, who specializes in women's studies and literature, is delving into her project at the Iowa Women's Archives of the University of Iowa with plans to produce an article incorporating her research. She is spending the summer term conducting research and will be back to teach in the fall 2014 semester.

Representing the psychology of organizations

Congratulations to Dr. Gary Coulton, associate professor of psychology, for his appointment to the Society for Industrial-Organizational Psychology (SIOP) Visibility Committee for 2015. SIOP is the largest professional association of Industrial-Organizational Psychologists in the United States, and supports the growing field studying workplace issues at the individual and organizational level.
