Texas A&M-San Antonio partners with Instituto Cervantes to bring Spanish into the classroom

SAN ANTONIO—Texas A&M University-San Antonio signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Instituto Cervantes, the largest institution in the world dedicated to teaching Spanish. This new partnership will enable A&M-San Antonio students to learn Spanish and develop a strategic program of special Spanish courses for companies and other community stakeholders. The partnership will designate Texas A&M-San Antonio as a DELE (Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language) Examination Center.

The Instituto Cervantes is a non-profit public body of the Kingdom of Spain, founded in 1991, that seeks to promote the teaching, study and use of the Spanish language, improve the knowledge, use and teaching of Spanish as a foreign language, and foster any activities that contribute to the advancement of Spanish education. Instituto Cervantes has centers in New York, Chicago and Albuquerque and a research project at Harvard University.

Joining Dr. Maria Hernandez Ferrier at the press conference were Ambassador Enric Panés, Consul General of Spain in Houston, Raul B. Rodriguez, Honorary Consul of Spain in San Antonio, Anastasio Sanchez Zamorano, Executive Director of Instituto Cervantes Albuquerque, Ramiro Cavazos, President & CEO of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Sherry Dowlatshahi, Chief of Protocol and Head of International Relations for the City of San Antonio, and Dr. Alfonso Chiscano.

“Bringing Instituto Cervantes into the classrooms of our Education, Business and Arts & Sciences programs is such an important milestone for Texas A&M-San Antonio,” said Dr. Ferrier. “Our students will be better prepared to work in the Spanish speaking world, which is rapidly expanding as Mexico and Latin America continue to influence business in San Antonio. We are always striving to provide the best education to our students, and this new partnership with Cervantes will create opportunities for exposure to the arts, culture Spain.”
