Message from the President

Dear Members of the University Community:

Governor Abbott signed SB 11, the campus concealed carry bill, on June 13, 2015. In preparation for implementing the bill's requirements The Texas A&M University System provided guidance for each of its member institutions, including A&M-San Antonio. Each Texas A&M institution has been given discretion to implement the law based on the nature of the student population, specific safety considerations and unique campus cultures. A Campus Carry Committee was chaired by Mr. Darrell Morrison and Dr. Melissa Mahan and student feedback was collected during two forums last fall with recommendations made in preparation for the implementation of the campus concealed carry law.

On April 27, 2016 the Board of Regents will consider the proposed campus carry rules in preparation for the campus carry law effective date of August 1, 2016. It is at the discretion of the Board of Regents in determining if modifications are to be made to the proposed rules. To review the proposal, you may visit the link on the Texas A&M University System website

Please note the law specifically prohibits university presidents from establishing "provisions that generally prohibit or have the effect of generally prohibiting license holders from carrying concealed handguns on campus." A&M-San Antonio's goal is to implement the bill in a manner consistent with the Legislature's intent while focusing on campus safety.

Warm Regards,

President Cynthia Teniente-Matson
