Texas A&M-San Antonio signs contract with College Credit for Heroes to support veteran students

SAN ANTONIO (May 17, 2016)— Texas A&M University-San Antonio signed an 18-month project contract with Texas Workforce Commission’s (TWC) College Credit for Heroes (CCH), a statewide competency-based education program that seeks to maximize the awarding of college credits to veterans and service members for their military training.

The program for CCH at A&M-San Antonio will include the creation of two online, competency-based Bachelors of Applied Arts & Sciences (BAAS) degrees and the creation of a competency-based general education core curriculum. These BAAS programs are four-year degrees that will utilize military training in lieu of up to 42 semester credit hours of electives, which allows a veteran to complete a bachelor’s degree in as little as two-and-a-half years instead of four years. 

All 13 of Texas A&M System universities joined the CCH in October 2013 as an effort to help more student veterans earn degrees. A&M-San Antonio’s Dean of the College of Business, Tracy Hurley, Ph.D., wrote A&M-San Antonio’s proposal to expand the program offerings in the College of Business to address high demand occupations in the greater San Antonio region and Texas—especially for veteran students.

“The addition of College Credit for Heroes at Texas A&M University-San Antonio gives our veterans opportunities to have the skills and knowledge they gained during service to our country recognized,” said University president, Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson. “As a Military Embracing University, having the opportunity to offer this to veterans will allow us to ease the transition of veterans to civilian life in education.”
