Texas A&M University-San Antonio dedicates and names first campus residence hall

SAN ANTONIO (September 6, 2016)–New beginnings are on the rise as Texas A&M University-San Antonio and American Campus Communities, Inc. (ACC), the nation’s leading owner, developer and manager of high-quality student housing communities, who celebrated the construction of the University’s first residence hall during a dedication ceremony today. During the ceremony, the residence hall name was revealed as Esperanza Hall, chosen after a university-wide vote.

“Research shows that on average students living on-campus have nearly a one-point higher GPA, achieve greater personal growth, have increased social interactions with their peers and are significantly more open to diversity,” said A&M-SA University President Cynthia Teniente-Matson during today’s ceremony.  “So, the residence hall will be more than just another beautiful building on campus— it will be a place of belonging and a home on campus that opens the door for opportunity.”

Now a comprehensive four-year university, the construction of a residence hall and establishment of a residential student population came as a supporting component of the University’s comprehensive expansion plan—a strategic development effort set in motion in 2015. Once construction is complete, residence hall rooms will first be offered to incoming freshmen and any remaining vacancies will then be filled based on student need.

Upon its opening in August 2017, the modern 104,805-square-foot facility will contain 382 beds of semi-suite style units in the heart of A&M-San Antonio’s main campus. The residence hall will also include a community center, fitness center, game room, mail room, an Academic Success Center with indoor and outdoor seating and a study lounge with group and private study areas.

The $20 million facility will mark the eleventh development produced by the Texas A&M University-ACC partnership, and the seventh time ACC has introduced first-time housing at a university.

"We’re excited for the opportunity to work with Texas A&M University- San Antonio and the Texas A&M University System to deliver the campus' inaugural student housing community,” said Bill Bayless, CEO of American Campus Communities. “It’s our goal to provide students with an environment conducive to academic and personal success, and thanks to the leadership of President Teniente-Matson and Chancellor Sharp, we have the opportunity to do just that."
