Dr. Rebekah Piper reviews her multicultural education and literacy research with The Academic Minute

pictureDr. Rebekah Piper, assistant professor of literacy, was featured on a podcast for The Academic Minute detailing her research on multicultural education and literacy research. The Academic Minute is a weekday broadcast featuring researchers from colleges and universities around the world. It is designed to keep listeners apprised of what's new and exciting in the academy, including the many ways academic research contributes to solving the world's toughest problems. Dr. Piper is the first A&M-SA professor to be featured.

During the two-minute podcast, Dr. Piper reviewed her recent qualitative, multiple-case study of seven Black students, ages eight to 12 years, who were given reading assignments focused on people, stories and accounts of the American Civil Rights movement. The results showed that students became more engaged, provided thoughtful analysis and often used a critical lens and even questioned what was being presented in the reading material provided.
