SAN ANTONIO – Texas A&M University-San Antonio is pleased to announce Priscilla Camacho and Romanita Matta-Barrera as members of the Foundation Board.
Chairman of the Foundation Board, Danny Zimmermann, spoke highly of both Ms. Camacho and Ms. Matta-Barrera.
“Ms. Camacho is a thought leader in our community with deep ties in San Antonio,” Mr. Zimmermann said. “From her very first meeting, she has jumped in and engaged with our board. With the prevalence of first-generation college students at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, her connection to the Alamo Colleges District is invaluable. Her skills, energy and extensive experience in education will raise the profile of our board.”
Prior to her current position as Director of Government and Community Relations at the Alamo Colleges, Ms. Camacho served as senior Vice President of Public Policy at the Dallas Regional Chamber of Commerce and as the Vice President of Education and Workforce Development at the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.
Recognized as a “Rising Star” and one of the “Best Lawyers in San Antonio” by Scene in S.A., and a “Texas Rising Star” by Law & Politics, Priscilla continues to serve the San Antonio community through her civic engagement, including leadership roles on nonprofit and governmental boards.
She is a 2005 graduate of Texas Tech University School of Law and has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English—Communications Arts from St. Mary’s University.
Mr. Zimmermann is excited to have Ms. Matta-Barrera as a member of the Texas A&M-San Antonio Foundation Board.
“Ms. Matta-Barrera brings expertise in economic development to our board. With the devastating economic impact from COVID, Texas A&M University-San Antonio will be a key partner with the City in retraining our workforce, and Ms. Matta-Barrera is just the person to help guide our foundation with this effort,” Mr. Zimmermann said.
Ms. Matta-Barrera is the Executive Director of SA Works, an organization of the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation that matches students seeking internships with local employers. Before joining SA Works, Ms. Matta-Barrera served as president and CEO of Fluent Strategy Group, a Washington D.C.-based marketing, public relations and public policy consultancy that provides Hispanic advisory services for South Texas clients seeking to enter new markets, mature brands, develop products or develop diversity programs.
Additionally, Ms. Matta-Barrera served as Deputy Director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans and Director of Hispanic Outreach and Communications at the U.S. Department of Education, and has served as the Texas Media Director for U.S. Senator John Cornyn.
Ms. Matta-Barrera is a graduate of the University of Texas—Austin with degrees in Government and Latin American Studies.
Texas A&M University-San Antonio Foundation
Established in 2008, the Foundation is committed to helping provide financial resources to ensure the success and permanence of A&M-San Antonio. The current focus of the board is fundraising for immediate scholarships and establishing endowments to create an ongoing source of scholarship funds. Since the Foundation’s inception, it has partnered with the University to raise more than $12.9 million in philanthropic support. During that time, the Foundation has awarded scholarships to more than 5,500 students through its two annual fundraising events: The Dream Maker Scholarship Luncheon and the Scholarship Golf Tournament.
The Foundation's Board of Directors are uncompensated volunteers committed to support A&M-San Antonio and its students. The Foundation's operations are guided by the Foundation By-Laws and the Affiliation Agreement signed between the Foundation and the University.
