Enrollment reaches historic milestones: largest first-year
class & nearly 7K enrollment
SAN ANTONIO – As students and families face increasing costs to earn a college degree, Texas A&M University-San Antonio is at the forefront of addressing the growing national concern with initiatives that maximize scholarships, value and access to quality higher education.
The Achiever Promise, a signature initiative that is providing qualified students with the support to graduate with little to no debt, launched in 2020 under the umbrella of the Jaguar Excellence Guarantee, which is extending access to the services and experiences increase a student’s ability to graduate on time and with the essential skills employers require.
- The Achiever Promise has enrolled nearly 350 scholars or about one-third of the first-year
- While Achiever Promise scholars were enrolled at A&M-San Antonio from across Texas recruitment efforts also focused on the Southside of San Antonio resulting in 114 scholars coming directly from one of the high schools in the ASPIRE network—an educational partnership with seven independent school districts in South Bexar County.
- Currently, A&M-San Antonio’s tuition is among the lowest in the state for a four-year university. Overall, 98 percent of students who complete the FAFSA receive financial assistance including grants, federal work-study, paid internships and loans, veteran’s education benefits and scholarships which far surpasses the national average of only 86 percent.
- This fall, the University saw record applications for first-year students resulting in the largest first-year class in the University’s history with nearly 7,000 total enrollment and about 1,070 first-year students.
“A&M-San Antonio continues to be one of the best educational values in the region. A university degree is a lifelong investment that impacts our students and their families. We continue to be committed to providing our students with the financial ability and access to a university degree and the Achiever Promise does just that,” said Brandy McLelland, vice president for enrollment management at A&M-San Antonio.
The Jaguar Excellence Guarantee, established in 2020 with a boost from the Texas A&M University’s $100M funding shared across its 11 campuses over the next 10 years, provides boundless opportunities to help students graduate with little to no debt.
- Some 73% of students pay $0 in tuition. Moreover, the Achiever Promise program, which is part of the Jaguar Excellence Guarantee, provides FREE tuition to graduating high school seniors in the top 10 percent of their class who enroll at the University. Additionally, graduating high school seniors from an Early College High School in Texas who have earned at least 30 college credits are eligible for free tuition.
