Institutional Review Board (IRB)

IRB Protocol Application Submission Process

If this is your first IRB Protocol Application at A&M-SA please schedule a meeting to discuss the scope of your study to determine the type of application you need to submit. New PI Training is available Tuesdays and Thursdays by request to irb@tamusa.edu.

All human subjects research must be submitted to the IRB for review and determination, even if you think the research does not require IRB review.

How to submit a request for IRB determination?

Protocols for IRB review and determination should be submitted via the pdf IRB Protocol Application found here. The IRB Protocol Application and supporting materials, such as recruitment materials, consent forms, surveys, questionnaires and required CITI trainings should be combined into one single pdf packet and submitted to irb@tamusa.edu.

Required CITI trainings can be found here

Protocols requiring Full Board Review, must be submitted at least a month in advance. Please refer here to the IRB meeting calendar and submission deadline. Your submission may require revisions before securing approval, so plan your work in advance and submit the protocol early to avoid delays in conducting your research.

How do I know my protocol application has been submitted?

For every new IRB Protocol Application submitted,an IRB number will be assigned and PIs will be notified via email.  At this point your application is officially submitted and available for administrative review. Please mention the assigned IRB number for any correspondence in the future.

How can I track the status of my application?

The Research Compliance Administrator (RCA) will update you throughout the review process via email. If you have any concerns or questions please contact the RCA.

How long will the review process take?

The length of your review process depends on the risk level to your research and the initial submission. In general, research with higher risk levels take longer to receive IRB review and determination.
