Jalnos photoLearning to forgive, but pledging never to forget

In commemoration of Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society invited Holocaust survivor Susanne Jalnos to speak at A&M-San Antonio on Tuesday, April 29. Ms. Jalnos discussed the harrowing experience of being torn from her life in Hungary and forced to live in a ghetto before getting deported to Auschwitz. When she and her family arrived at the concentration camp on June 6 (D-Day), Susanne and her sister, Anna Rado, who spoke at A&M-SA in 2013, were separated from their parents. They never saw their parents alive again. Nearly a hundred students, faculty, and members of the community came to listen to Ms. Jalnos's incredible story of courage, survival, and forgiveness.

A personal connection to Texas history

Dr. Edith Esparza-Young, assistant professor of bilingual education and ESL, was recently published in the spring 2014 edition of the Journal of Latino Studies. The publication, "Revolucion to La Huelga: The Brownsville Eagle bus strike of 1980," was written in collaboration with Shannon Baker, professor of history at A&M-Kingsville. Dr. Esparza-Young has a personal connection to the Brownsville Eagle bus strike which inspired her to write the article. "This is my father's story," said Dr. Esparza-Young. An immigrant from Mexico who worked as a carpenter, Francisco Esparza created satirical cartoons and drawings that called his fellow workers to action, instigating a strike which was eventually won in Brownsville, Texas.
