Corazon imageFirst art exhibition opens to rave reviews at downtown cultural arts center

Texas A&M University-San Antonio invited the public to celebrate a milestone cultural achievement: the opening of its inaugural art exhibition at the Educational & Cultural Arts Center, located in the heart of the Zona Cultural on Friday, May 9, 2014. The exhibition, entitled Contemporary Latino Art: El Corazón de San Antonio, showcases 79 local artists who are central to the on-going art narrative of our city.

Dr. Maria Hernandez Ferrier hosted the opening reception, welcoming City Councilman for District 1, Diego Bernal, and Felix Padrón, director of the San Antonio Department of Culture and Creative Development.

This landmark exhibition is the first step in A&M-San Antonio's commitment to share the story of the Latino experience in America and South Texas and surveys the wealth of talent in San Antonio's Latin@ arts community with over 100 pieces of art, centering on the people, places, and things closest to the heart.

The public is also invited to attend a special educational event on Saturday, May 24, entitled “Chicano Art in San Antonio: Panel Discussion.”

The exhibition is free and open to the public through August 31. Hours can be found at www.tamusa-ecac.com. Read about it in the San Antonio Express-News or The Rivard Report, and click the picture for a sneak peek on our Facebook page!

Announcing a plan for guaranteed tuition

To keep tuition affordable, the Texas A&M University System regents voted to approve A&M-SA's plan for a higher undergraduate tuition rate that will be locked in for a student's first nine semesters. The "Guaranteed Tuition Plan," approved on May 1, will go into effect for the fall 2014 semester and includes tuition and mandatory fees. Nonresidents and graduate students are not affected by this new plan. The San Antonio Express-News reported on the proposed plan and its approval.
