Apply SAN ANTONIO — Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp, Texas A&M University-San Antonio (A&M-SA) President Cynthia Teniente-Matson and other elected officials and community leaders celebrated the grand opening of the state-of-the-art Science and Technology Building at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018. The ceremony took place outside the building’s new courtyard entrance, which looks out onto the campus quad.
Following the grand opening of the new building, all guests moved inside the new building to the Mays Center Foyer for the dedication of the Mays Center for Experiential Learning and Community Engagement.
“The new Science and Technology Building we celebrate today is not really about bricks and mortar, but rather a revolution in science and technology. It provides a pathway to rapidly evolving STEM and cyber security programs that will generate new inventions and grow our economy. In addition, the new Mays Center will provide our students with increased opportunities to learn by doing — through community service, civic engagement, internships and job-shadowing, and community-based, work-study programs with local employers,” Matson explained.
In February 2017, the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents voted to approve the construction of the new building and work crews broke ground later that month. The construction of the 140,000-square-foot Science and Technology Building was made possible by the efforts of the 84th Texas Legislature. The sessions resulted in funding of $11 million to support comprehensive expansion and $63 million in Tuition Revenue Bonds (TRB) to support infrastructure of the building. The 4,200-square-foot Mays Center was made possible by a $5 million donation from the Mays Family Foundation, which is the largest gift in A&M-SA’s history.
In addition to housing the Mays Center, the Science and Technology Building is home to state-of-the-art research labs, classroom, collaborative spaces and faculty offices for A&M-SA’s kinesiology and natural sciences programs, along with the Center for Information Technology and Cyber Secuity. The current footprint of the new building will be expanded by more than 20,000 square feet in January 2019 to provide additional space for academic programs in the sciences as well as in cyber and engineering technology and electronic systems engineering technology.
