A&M-SA delegation participate in first Texas Voting Summit

A&M-SA representatives participated in the first annual Texas Voting Summit Aug. 20-21, 2018, hosted in Austin by the Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life. This invitation-only affair, expected to be held annually in the Texas Capitol Building, was focused on Texas youth voter trends and how student leaders can encourage peers to engage in civic activities. Three exceptional Jaguar students, Ayla Rodriguez, Danielle Rios and Karl Vonzell Mitchell, represented our institution alongside Christina Guerra, civic engagement coordinator in the Mays Center for Experiential Learning and Community Engagement. 

Of the 73 students in attendance representing 35 Texas schools, Karl Vonzell Mitchell was selected as the keynote presentation moderator and Q&A representative. Karl received the honor of interviewing Texas Director of Elections Keith Ingram, and prepared his own set of hard-hitting and information-rich questions that enlightened the audience on many aspects of Mr. Ingram's work and plans for upcoming elections. Students participated in teams to create campus plans that focused on fostering civic participation on the A&M-SA campus. They are looking forward to the opportunity to work together with our institutional team to put those ideas into action.
