Apply HOUSTON – The Texas A&M–San Antonio men’s golf team made school history Monday when they opened play at the Houston Classic, hosted by Southwestern Christian University (Okla.).
The Jaguars competed in the school’s first varsity intercollegiate competition playing in Monday’s opening round at the Houston Classic. Texas A&M–San Antonio’s varsity athletics program launched in February, 2021 with the debuts of the men’s golf team and softball team.
Donny Harper and Javy Jazo both recorded Top 15 finishes at the event, which concluded with Tuesday’s third round. Harper finished tied for 11th with a 22-over-par 238 for his three-round score; he carded a team-best round of 73 in Monday’s first round and was in second place individually after the opening round.
Meanwhile, Jazo finished with 23-over-par 239, good for 13th place. Jazo trimmed his score in each subsequent round, carding rounds of 81, 80 and 78 for the event.
Noel Silva, a native of San Antonio (South San Antonio HS) carded a three-round score of 262, good for 23rd place individually. Alejandro Guarneros finished with a final score of 275, good for 25th place, and rounding out Texas A&M–San Antonio’s team score of 1014.
Michael Burnias shot a 278 for the event, carding an 88 in the third round Tuesday.
The Jaguars finished 35 strokes ahead of Tabor College (Kan.). Southwestern Christian won the event with a team score of 31-over-par 895.
The Texas A&M–San Antonio men’s golf team returns to action Sunday, Feb. 14, and Monday, Feb. 15, when the Jaguars compete at the Claud Jacobs Collegiate Invitational in Victoria, Texas.
