Texas A&M San Antonio Celebrates Oakley's Life

The Texas A&M San Antonio University Police Department (UPD) held a heartwarming Celebration of Life and Open House on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, to honor their cherished K-9 Oakley.

Oakley, born on August 26, 2016, served the A&M-San Antonio community for seven years.  He played a vital role in comforting crime victims and witnesses, helping to reduce their stress. Studies have shown that simply being around a therapy animal like Oakley can make a significant difference in a victim's experience.  Beyond his official duties, Oakley was a beloved campus community member, enjoying walks and receiving pats from students, faculty, and staff.

Office of Victim Services and Crime Prevention Karen Tucker-Engel and her husband, Richard Tucker-Engel, raised Oakley.  He was later joined by his younger sister, Scout, who often accompanied him on his rounds, bringing smiles to the faces of many students.

During the ceremony, Interim Chief of Police Officer Roger Stearns paid tribute to Oakley, saying, "He was born to love, trained to serve, and loyal till the end."

Following the unveiling of Oakley's portrait, which will be displayed in the UPD lobby, the department hosted an open house at their new location. The event featured fun activities for students, including pedal carts with drunk goggles, "shoot-don't-shoot" scenarios, and refreshments like hotdogs and popcorn. There was a contest where attendees could guess the number of treats in Oakley's treat jar and Scout's weight.

While Scout may not be quite ready to fill Oakley's impressive pawprints, the A&M-San Antonio community eagerly awaits her journey. All the while, we remain deeply grateful for the unwavering dedication and love Oakley provided for seven unforgettable years.
