Dear Faculty and Staff,
Texas A&M University-San Antonio is pleased to announce Steven G. Olswang, J.D., Ph.D., as Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. Olswang, who served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at City University of Seattle, 2008-2015, will begin his new role at A&M-SA on February 29, 2016.
Having been chosen by a selection committee, Dr. Olswang will utilize his expertise as an administrator, lecturer, academic researcher and legal counselor to advance academic affairs to meet the goals the University has established as a new four-year institution. In addition, he will concentrate on ensuring the continued success of the strong, forward-looking transfer and graduate programs. Primarily, he will guide the University in developing an administrative infrastructure for the successful academic integration of the first class of four-year students. This will include establishing standards for scheduling, core curriculum, space management and other logistical details. He will also lead the academic program implementation, outline plans for assessment and attend to other core instructional needs relative to the first-year experience.
"Dr. Olswang has extensive experience in public higher education, as well as recent experience in a private non-profit institution," Dr. Matson said. "He has overseen extensive enrollment growth, downward expansion and new degree offerings in multiple formats including competency-based education and online, international and corporate programs."
Dr. Olswang will succeed Brent M. Snow, Ph.D., who has led academic affairs since 2010. Snow's dedication as an administrative leader and professor of counseling and psychology served as a great building block in the University's foundation, and his contributions are greatly appreciated. Snow will continue to serve the Jaguar community as Senior Associate to the President.
The Office of the Provost, to be led by Dr. Olswang, will continue to foster and support academic excellence throughout the University. "I am honored to work with the Leadership, Faculty, Staff and Students in meeting the educational needs of our current and future students. A&M-SA's transition to a comprehensive university, serving freshman and sophomores, in addition to juniors, seniors, and master students will be a terrific service for the San Antonio community," Dr. Olswang shared. Having an in-depth understanding of academic culture for growing universities, he will concentrate on implementing initiatives for academic advancement, downward expansion and faculty development. He will also collaborate in shared governance with Faculty Senate leadership and numerous planning initiatives on campus.
Dr. Olswang has a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Washington, 1977, a J.D. from the University of Illinois, 1971, and a B.A. in Sociology from Northwestern University, 1968. His most recent position was Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at City University of Seattle. Previously, he served as Interim Chancellor at the University of Washington Bothell; Interim Chancellor at the University of Washington Tacoma; and served as the University of Washington's Vice Provost and Vice Provost for International Education. Dr. Olswang is Professor Emeritus of Higher Education and Law at the University of Washington. He was a Visiting Professor at the University of Cambridge and the University of Reading (U.K.) as a J. William Fulbright Academic Administrative Fellow, and served as a Fulbright/DAAD Visitor to the Universities in Germany.
