Families First Seminar

On February 13, approximately 40 people gathered in the Ceremony Room to begin A&M-SA's nine-week Family First seminar. The program is designed to foster family members' active and ongoing role in student success. Participation in this second cohort of the program increased significantly over the first cohort in fall 2017, thanks to A&M-SA's partnership with Gear Up, a federal college prep program in the Harlandale and San Antonio independent school districts.

President Cynthia Teniente-Matson, Ed.D. served as the keynote speaker for the first class--welcoming participants and encouraging them to build a long-term partnership with the University. 

The idea of the seminar piqued the interest of Silvia Foster-Frau, a San Antonio Express-News reporter, who ventured to campus to join the first class. She then wrote an article about the distinct features of the program, including the Spanish translation service offered to participants. 

"Situated at tables in front of a Powerpoint screen and a podium, the parents went through syllabi in English and in Spanish," she wrote. "Some wore white headphones to hear simultaneous Spanish translations."
