Apply SAN ANTONIO (February 22, 2017)— To honor San Antonio’s 300th anniversary, Texas A&M University-San Antonio (A&M-SA) is hosting a celebratory event for the opening of its Tricentennial-themed exhibit, “San Antonio as a Crossroads: 300 Years of an Evolving Frontier Community.” Located at Presidio Gallery, the new home for A&M-SA’s Archives and Special Collections, the cultural exhibit explores San Antonio’s vibrant history through photographs, artwork, maps, documents, artifacts and ephemera. Visitors can expect to see one-of-a-kind items, including the first land grant in San Antonio, a letter from 1865 describing San Antonio during the Civil War and an engraved silver bugle from 1917 used to play “Taps” for fallen World War I officers who were trained in San Antonio.
The celebratory event, which will take place at Presidio Gallery on Thursday, March 1 from 11 a.m.- noon, is free and open to the public. It will feature remarks from Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson, president of A&M-SA, and Leslie Stapleton, manager of the University’s Archives and Special Collections, followed by tours of the exhibit. Presidio Gallery is located in the Bexar County Archives Building (formerly the Federal Reserve Bank Building) in the heart of the city’s downtown area at 126 E. Nueva, San Antonio, TX 78204.
“This exhibit will allow people to explore the history of our great city and learn more about the many cultures that make San Antonio such a unique place,” said Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson. “With priceless contributions from a number of individuals and organizations, including the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Bexar County’s Spanish Archives and the Canary Islands Descendants Association, this exhibit is a must-see attraction during the Tricentennial celebration.”
The exhibit will remain on display through December 2018.
