A&M-SA and the Communication Program Host Gridiron: 300 Years of Laughter

On Oct. 20, A&M-SA and the Communication Program welcomed to campus Gridiron: 300 Years of Laughter. Presented by the San Antonio Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, the annual event features a series of skits --enacted by local journalists -- that take a comical look at the year in the news, or in this case the last three centuries of San Antonio milestones.

The show opened with a musical dance performance called Celebrate Good News, set to the tune of the Kool and the Gang classic. Emceed by Randy Beamer, who offered several irreverent monologues, the skits covered a wide swath of San Antonio history, ranging from an interview with Madam Candelaria, a survivor of the 1836 Battle of the Alamo, to Bob Hope's performance at the 1968 World's Fair in San Antonio, called HemisFair.

From start to finish, raucous laughter reverberated of the walls of the Auditorium, which was filled with members of the A&M-SA and broader San Antonio communities, including Mayor Ron Nirenberg and Erika Prosper Nirenberg along with U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro and Julian Castro, former San Antonio Mayor and HUD Secretary. Kudos to Jenny Moore, Jerry Townsend and their colleagues and students for hosting the event!
