Financial Literacy of South Texas funds scholarships and community projects
SAN ANTONIO—Texas A&M University-San Antonio announced today a $1 million gift to the institution from the Financial Literacy of South Texas Foundation (FLSTF) to establish a permanent endowment to support an innovative approach to tackling financial literacy in the community while providing opportunities to students to be part of the solution. The gift was presented May 13 during the A&M-San Antonio’s commemoration of its 10th anniversary of its founding.
The gift will provide funding for two areas supporting financial literacy. The first, scholarships for students majoring in accounting and finance, gives special consideration for students who can demonstrate an active role in promoting financial literacy within the community. The second phase of the project will fund stipends for students who are engaged in financial literacy projects sponsored by the Mays Center for Experiential Learning and Community Engagement.
“We saw that A&M-San Antonio was the right university to be able to positively affect education for a student population that historically has had limited exposure to credit and debt management, financial operations and investing. We also knew that the University would be excellent stewards of these resources and understood the need in our community for financial literacy education and the impact of that education on individuals and the health of our community,” said Paul Denham, a FLSTF board member.
“Financial literacy is a critical skill in the lives of our students and community. This gift aligns with our mission to create learning opportunities that foster social development and scholarship and public service while advancing our commitment to high impact learning experiences directly aligned to financial literacy, one of the challenges of the day,” said Cynthia Teniente-Matson, president of A&M- San Antonio. “We are grateful to the Financial Literacy of South Texas Foundation for investing in the future of our students and community.”
The A&M-SA’s Accounting and Finance Department is part of the College of Business and offers a BBA in Accounting, BBA in Finance and Master of Professional Accounting degrees. A&M-SA also offers a number of resource and programs related to financial literacy, beginning with new student orientation and continuing throughout the student’s time on campus.
