Apply Golden Egg contest winners announced during virtual event
SAN ANTONIO – Texas A&M University-San Antonio announced country star Kevin Fowler will headline the Festival de Cascarones event rescheduled for Sunday, Nov. 15. The University also gave away free tuition for one student, plus cash and prizes to several others, in a virtual video contest as part of the annual celebration on campus.
Announced on Facebook LIVE as part of A&M-San Antonio’s Virtual Festival de Cascarones event, the addition of Fowler as the headliner is part of the University’s efforts to revamp the rescheduled Festival de Cascarones celebration in November. Within the live stream, A&M-San Antonio President Cynthia Teniente-Matson also shared the winners of the Golden Egg contest, which provided current and future University students an opportunity to win free tuition for a semester. Immediately following the live stream, Fowler sent a personal message to the University community encouraging viewers to take care of themselves as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
“As we all make adjustments to stay safe and healthy during the outbreak, we believe it is also important to continue engaging with our community,” President Matson said. “Between hosting this virtual contest for our students and announcing an exciting headliner for our November celebration, we hope we were able to share some much-needed Fiesta spirit with the community.”
As part of A&M-San Antonio’s efforts to continue University traditions and celebrate with the community, Festival de Cascarones will take on special significance this year, as the event combines the University’s traditional autumn event, Fall Fest, and a special salute to the U.S. Armed Forces in honor of Celebrate America’s Military (CAM) Week. Officially named “Fall Festival de Cascarones Presents Saluting America’s Military,” the family-friendly free event will include many event traditions, as well as some new fall-themed festivities in line with A&M-San Antonio’s Military Embracing™ designation.
In the meantime, to acknowledge what would have been the traditional Festival de Cascarones celebration, A&M-San Antonio hosted a Golden Egg virtual cascarón smash contest. Current and future University students submitted their best cascarón smash videos for a chance to receive a free tuition waiver for a semester. President Matson announced the winners on Facebook LIVE Sunday evening. The recipients, selected by a committee of judges comprised of staff representatives from student engagement offices across campus, included: Alexa Leal-Ramón, first-prize winner of free tuition for a semester; Vanessa Cardoza, second-prize winner of a Fiesta prize pack, including two VIP tickets to Festival de Cascarones in November; and Presciliano Hernandez, third-prize winner of a Jaguar swag pack.
Five contest participants were also selected at random to receive $100 gift cards, sponsored by American Campus Communities, which manages the University’s Esperanza Hall. The winners were Karina Salmon, Eliza Olvera, Martina Montoya, Paola Saenz and Milagro Aguilar.

A&M-San Antonio has hosted Festival de Cascarones since 2012. The annual event marks the conclusion of San Antonio’s Fiesta celebration, featuring food, live music and entertainment. Last year, more than 6,000 people attended the celebration of the confetti and egg, and to mark a festive end to Fiesta.
