Apply President Cynthia Teniente-Matson to announce winners Sunday on Facebook Live
SAN ANTONIO – Current and incoming students at Texas A&M University-San Antonio will have a chance to win a tuition-free semester for submitting the best at-home video of a cascarón smash. This adds a virtual element to the traditional Festival de Cascarones event on campus, which has annually marked the end of San Antonio’s Fiesta since 2012.
“We’re proud to be the annual host of the closing event of Fiesta, and even though this year is very different, we wanted to acknowledge and celebrate this great tradition in a new way on the date we would have been hosting a giant party,” President Cynthia Teniente-Matson said of the Golden Egg online student contest. “We’re challenging our students to show and share their creativity, even as they stay home as part of our national effort to combat the COVID-19 epidemic. Technology meets tradition, and fun, and we’re truly excited to see what our students come up with.”
The Golden Egg contest – sponsored by A&M-San Antonio and open to current and future students – is open for submissions through Sunday at noon. Participants may submit their videos on the University’s website through the contest entry form, accessible here: https://www.tamusa.edu/festival-decascarones/contest-entry-form.html.
Matson will announce the winners in a Facebook Live event from campus Sunday, April 26, on the University’s Facebook page. Official rules and eligibility guidelines are posted on the contest site. The contest winner will receive a tuition fee waiver for one free semester (up to 15 credit hours) at A&M-San Antonio. The second-place finisher will win a Fiesta prize pack and two VIP tickets to the rescheduled Festival de Cascarones on Nov. 15, and the third-place finisher will receive a Jaguar swag pack.
Festival de Cascarones – which began as a campus event in 2012 – is an annual free event that marks the conclusion of San Antonio’s Fiesta celebration, featuring food, live music and entertainment. Last year, more than 6,000 people came to campus for the celebration of the confetti and egg, and to create a festive end to Fiesta.
