A&M-San Antonio offers first-ever free Challenge to ASPIRE Virtual Summer Camps

SAN ANTONIO – As part of efforts to provide unforgettable summer experiences for local students while continuing to observe social distancing guidelines, Texas A&M University-San Antonio is offering its first-ever free virtual summer camps to area students.

Known as the Challenge to ASPIRE Virtual Camps, these virtual retreats will take place June 22-26 and July 13-17, providing 70 middle school students with two unique opportunities to enjoy interactive learning and fun. The community response has been excellent, as the June segment is already at capacity and July segment slots are going fast.

“We are pleased to be able to offer these types of opportunities free for our local community,” said Vanessa Quiroga, director of Community Partnerships & Campus Visit Experience. “By exposing young people to the University, we hope that will spark curiosity and interest in higher education and further promote a college-going culture in our community.”

The camp curriculum will feature a special virtual tour of A&M-San Antonio and presentations from University staff and alumni, as well as several high-profile presenters, including:

• San Antonio’s Museum for Kids – the DoSeum
• NASA’s STEM Engagement Educator Professional Development Collaborative
• San Antonio College’s Scobee Education Center

The camps will take place virtually through WebEx, a Web teleconferencing application. To participate, students will login to WebEx live Monday through Friday during the designated weeks from 9 a.m. to noon. The University will supply all materials and work with students who may require technology support.
