A&M-SA to host national inaugural Hispanic-Serving Institution Career Collaborative Summit

National brands and regional employers to provide career advice, new partnership launches

San Antonio –  Fourteen of the nation’s leading Hispanic Serving Institutions are participating in a first-ever Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Career Collaborative Summit hosted by Texas A&M University-San Antonio this week connecting to more than 130 companies. The two-day Summit, Wednesday and Thursday, April 14-15, launches a partnership creating a platform for recruiting and networking between employers, students and alumni to further align workforce opportunities. The Summit is a joint effort between Texas A&M University-San Antonio and HSIs from across the country including the Fresno State, Florida International University, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Texas-San Antonio, and University of the Incarnate Word.  (A complete list of participants is enclosed).

The Summit provides a virtual platform for students and alumni from participating institutions to engage with 130+ companies through professional development workshops and a career expo including a keynote address by Leo Cortez, head of University Recruiting and Diversity Talent at Airbnb; Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and (name some of the national and regional leaders). A Career Expo Thursday, April 15, will provide student and alumni from participating institutions the prospect to network with company representatives and learn about career opportunities at Airbnb, Amazon, Autodesk, AstraZeneca, CVS Health, Dell Technologies, Deloitte, Kohl’s, Microsoft, Nordstrom, PwC, Target, Toyota, Walmart, and more. This summit is sponsored by Accenture Federal Services, Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Services, H-E-B, X (formerly Google X), and Ford.

“The first-of-its kind Summit brings together some of the nation’s leading HSI’s and exemplifies a commitment to student success and building bridges for transferable skills to flourish, career success to take flight, and that lifelong learning to always be within reach,” said Edwin Blanton, director of Texas A&M-San Antonio’s Mays Center for Experiential Learning and Community Engagement. The Mays Center has been a driving force to guide students and A&M-San Antonio alumni during the COVID-19 pandemic with counsel and resources through its Career Services. These services are central to the university’s thinking, according to Blanton, as the university identifies unique ways to help students and alumni promote their skills and provide opportunities that for career growth.

“In order to meet the demands of the workforce, it is obvious that universities should be collaborative partners to facilitate opportunities for students and alumni they serve. These type of institutional partnerships across the nation create sustainable partnerships that raise the profile of our HSI institutions, respond to demands requested by top employers internationally, and support our efforts to prepare our students and alumni for a global workforce,” said Karen Ivy, Director of the Career Services at Texas A&M-San Antonio.

This virtual event will take place on the 14th and 15th of April via Zoom and is powered by Handshake. The employer professional development session will kick off with a fireside chat with Juan Sánchez Muñoz, Chancellor of the University of California, Merced, and Astro Teller, CEO of X, the Moonshot Factory, along with two employer panel sessions on Building a Family Community and Inclusive Corporate Culture, and Reducing Unconscious Bias in Your Recruitment Process.
