SAN ANTONIO (November 30, 2017)—Today, the San Antonio City Council approved the appointment of Texas A&M University-San Antonio’s (A&M-SA) Director of Military Affairs Richard Delgado Jr. as the mayoral appointee to the City Commission on Veterans Affairs. Mayor Nirenberg appointed Delgado after receiving several resounding letters of recommendation and a formal application.
On the commission, Delgado will serve as the community's liaison and advocate for veterans affairs. He will advise the City Council on issues affecting San Antonio veterans and their families, and make recommendations for improving services. The City Commission on Veterans Affairs is an 11-member board representing the Mayor and 10 City Council Districts. All members must be veterans and may serve no more than three (3) two-year terms. The Commission's mission is to serve the City Council in an advisory capacity on legislative issues affecting the City's military population, both active duty and retired.

Ayala, USMC Ret, Director of the City of San Antonio’s Office of Military Affairs. “As a post 9/11 Veteran, Richard’s experience and insights will be invaluable to veterans from all generations, especially the fast-growing numbers of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans who are returning to San Antonio.”
Delgado’s appointment to the City Commission on Veterans Affairs is effective immediately. He hopes to provide more resources and opportunities to the veterans within Military City USA. “It’s an honor to continue serving,” says Delgado. “This is a wonderful opportunity and a privilege to give back to those military brothers and sisters who gave so much to me.”
Delgado served in the United States Marine Corps for 10 years as an Air Field Operations Chief. He was honorably discharged in 2010 after sustaining injury. Soon after, Delgado pursued higher education. He earned a bachelor's in business administration from A&M-SA and then became the director of Military Affairs. In his role, Delgado provides support for military and veteran students and their families. A&M-SA is the only Purple Heart University in San Antonio, and 17 percent of A&M-SA students are military-connected.
Delgado’s longstanding efforts to support veterans extends beyond the Military EmbracingTM institution. He also serves on San Antonio Coalition for Veterans and Families Board and the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Council. In addition, Delgado is a squad leader for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) San Antonio.
