Media Advisory: Speaker will recount story of overcoming homelessness

A&M-San Antonio’s ASPIRE Family Night will feature Roy Juarez, Jr.

SAN ANTONIOTexas A&M University-San Antonio will hold its first ASPIRE Family Night Thursday from 6-8 p.m. featuring motivational speaker Roy Juarez, Jr., the author of “Homeless By Choice.” The event will be in the campus Auditorium and is free and open to the public.

ASPIRE is a first-of-its kind collaborative effort between the University and seven South Bexar County ISDs (East Central, Edgewood, Harlandale, Somerset, South San Antonio, Southside and Southwest). It will develop educational programs and services to support existing programs to tackle persistent teacher shortages, curriculum development challenges and gaps in services for children with special needs across south Bexar County and south San Antonio.

ASPIRE (short for A&M-San Antonio & South Bexar County ISDs Partnership to Impact Regional Equity and Excellence) will focus on customized solutions for the needs of each of the seven ISDs.

Juarez is a nationally recognized motivational speaker and San Antonio native. He will share his story about overcoming his emotional and troubled past that left him homeless and living on the streets of San Antonio at the age of 14.

The Harlandale High School mariachi group will perform following the program.
