Media Advisory: South Texas cattlemen featured in historical exhibit at Presidio Gallery - opening with reception Tuesday, Feb. 18

SAN ANTONIO – A new historical exhibit about the South Texas cattle industry will open Tuesday, Feb. 18, with a reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m. as part of Texas A&M University-San Antonio’s 10-year anniversary celebration. “Cattlemen of South Texas: Their Auctions, Brands, and Bulls” will be at the University’s Presidio Gallery in the Bexar County Archives Building, located at 126 E. Nueva St. in San Antonio.

A&M-San Antonio President Cynthia Teniente-Matson will speak at the reception, which is free and open to the public.

About half of the exhibit is papers, photos and memorabilia of the late Humberto (Bert) V. Reyes donated by his daughter, Carmelita. Reyes, an auctioneer and cattleman, was a legend in the South Texas cattle industry and the last cattleman at Union Stockyards in San Antonio. The other half of the exhibit contains materials about historic family ranches from the Daughters of the Republic of Texas archives housed in the University Library.

“This is an important exhibit because it honors the contributions Mr. Reyes made to the cattle industry and honors his legacy,” said Leslie Stapleton, archives and special collections manager, and curator of the exhibit. “It also provides an interesting glimpse into San Antonio’s strong heritage in the cattle industry. It’s a way for people to remember that, and share it with the next generation.”

The exhibit runs through December 2020.
